| Abstract | This paper explores Rose Hsu Jordan’s psychological journey in Amy Tan’s The Joy Luck Club using Sigmund Freud’s model of the mind. Rose, the daughter of Chinese immigrant An-mei Hsu, faces a deep internal conflict. The paper examines how the id, ego, and superego interact in Rose’s actions, especially regarding her marriage to Ted Jordan, her tendency to depend on others excessively, and her eventual move toward self-assertion. |
