Motherhood, Marriage, and Rebellion: Female Empowerment Across Postcolonial African Literature

Abstract	This paper explores female empowerment in postcolonial African literature through the lenses of motherhood, marriage, and rebellion. Focusing on works by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Buchi Emecheta, Flora Nwapa, Mariama Bâ, and Tsitsi Dangarembga, it examines how female characters navigate patriarchal and colonial legacies. Motherhood emerges as both a site of oppression and a source of strength; marriage often symbolizes constraint yet becomes a battleground for agency; and rebellion subtle or overt drives empowerment. Drawing on postcolonial feminist and womanist theories, the analysis reveals how these authors portray African women as agents of cultural and personal transformation in the face of colonialism’s aftermath, neocolonialism, and traditional gender norms. The paper argues that these themes collectively challenge single stories of African womanhood and affirm multifaceted paths to liberation.
