Abstract The Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) have a long history in India. They date back to the Vedic era and were founded on the ideas of decentralization and widespread participation in the decision-making process. Gram Panchayats are regarded as the fundamental units of local government under the Panchayati Raj system of governance. Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) are primarily responsible for carrying out the operations of the rural development program. The elimination of poverty and the socioeconomic advancement of rural residents are the primary goals of the rural development program. Additionally, it offers rural residents all governmental and administrative services. Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) are currently a successful platform for rural development and village reconstruction, and they seek to translate the Gandhian dream of self-governance by villagers (Gram Swaraj). Panchayati Raj Institutions now play a significant role in rural development thanks to State Acts implemented in accordance with the spirit of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment. In the Indian Republic, Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) are increasingly being asked to help the government of India and a number of state governments implement various rural development and poverty alleviation initiatives. This research paper will reflect rural development program and the steps taken by government of India for rural development and the role of PRIs in rural development.
