Child Marriage – A Social Barrier Its Trend Over The Years From 2010 To 2020

| Abstract | ABSTRACT Child marriage- defined by UNICEF as marriage before18 years of age. Child marriage is one of the most prevalent forms of sexual abuse and exploitation especially of girls. Child marriage serves as a means to perpetuate power imbalances between men and women, both in the home and outside. Child marriage is objectionable for several reasons. The practice condemns children to an existence devoid of education, health, safety, and freedom of choice. Child marriage causes physical, psychological and intellectual impact on the child bride. It has an adverse effect on girl’s health along with increased risk of sexually transmitted diseases, cervical cancer, diabetes, heart disease. Gynecol (2009) stated that marriages in which a child under the age of 18 years is involved occur worldwide, but mainly seen in South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. A human rights violation, child marriage directly affects girls’ education, health, psychological well-being, and the health of their offspring (as cited in Nour, 2009). The major objectives of the study are-1.To analyse the socio-economic , cultural and institutional factors responsible for early marriage in the study area and the various issues related to child marriage,2.To analyse whether the various governmental measure (Kanyasree Prakalpa) have been successful to control child marriage,3.To find out if there is an increase in child marriage due to pandemic,4.To analyse constitutional and legal measures against child marriage and their implementation. Spatial variation and comparison between villages is shown.Suggestions include there is Need to formulate more stringent laws,Expecting more financial help from the Government,Promote employment opportunities for girls. |
