A Study on Opportunities and Challenges of Kaziranga National Park of Assam

Abstract The Kaziranga National Park (KNP), a UNESCO World Heritage site and Tiger Reserve, remains a globally significant protected area, sheltering one of the most iconic and threatened assemblages of megafauna, including the one-horned rhinoceros, tiger, Asian elephant, wild water buffalo and swamp deer. The dynamic floodplain ecosystem of the park, formed by annual inundations of the Brahmaputra River and its tributaries, supports a mosaic of grasslands, wetlands, marshes, forests and riverine habitats — making it a biodiversity hotspot of both fauna and flora. This paper examines the twin facets of opportunity and challenge that define Kaziranga’s present and future: the potential for biodiversity conservation, eco-tourism, scientific research, community development and climate-resilience; and, on the other hand, the persistent threats from floods, habitat loss, poaching, human-wildlife conflict, infrastructural pressures, invasive species, and governance constraints. Through a review of existing literature, official reports and recent studies, the paper identifies strategic interventions necessary for sustainable management and long-term preservation of the park’s ecological integrity while balancing socio-economic benefits for local communities.
