| Abstract | The emergence of Industry 4.0 has ushered in autonomous manufacturing paradigms characterized by Cyber Physical Production Systems (CPPS), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), advanced robotics, and digital twin technologies. In the context of plastics manufacturing—especially injection molding, extrusion, and additive manufacturing—autonomous factories promise enhanced efficiency, quality, sustainability, and flexibility. This article reviews the current state of research, proposes a methodology to implement autonomy in plastics production, presents illustrative results from pilot implementations, and discusses implications for industry stakeholders. Findings indicate that deployment of interconnected sensing, AI driven control loops, and collaborative robots reduces downtime, scrap rates, and energy consumption while enabling rapid product changeovers. Challenges include integration complexity, data management, workforce adaptation, and cybersecurity. The article concludes with recommendations and future directions toward scalable autonomous plastics factories. |
